Tips from a photographer for your rainy wedding day photoshoot

When you imagine your wedding day, you probably dream of a blue sky and the sun shining down on your celebration, not a rainy wedding day. But as you know, weather is something that cannot be predicted, especially with a long-planned event like a wedding, and rain is a variable you should consider.

Don’t worry about what you can’t change, but plan and organize as much as possible to make the most of every situation… even with a rainy wedding day! In fact, I assure you it holds extraordinary potential for your photos. Let’s discover together how to use bad weather to our advantage and get a wonderful wedding photoshoot even in the rain.

Logistic Management and Plan B

Logistic management is crucial when planning an outdoor wedding, especially during certain months of the year when rain is a real possibility. Make sure to have a solid Plan B in case of bad weather; this could involve arranging for a tent where the ceremony can be held or, alternatively, having a plan to move the entire event to an indoor location. If you’re working with a wedding planner, they will ensure a secure Plan B is in place; otherwise, talk to the venue manager to ensure everything is well defined. Aside from the reception, venues often have sheltered areas where you can take your wedding photos. A room in the villa, a staircase in a building, outdoor arcades… all of these are situations we can use for your wedding photography with rain. Remember, the focus is on you.

Enjoy the natural light during the rainy wedding day photoshoot

When it rains or the sky is overcast, sunlight filters through the clouds, creating a soft and diffused atmosphere that is always perfect for your photographs. Sunlight, on the other hand, creates harsh shadows that need to be managed precisely and calculatedly. Take advantage of this natural light to capture romantic and evocative shots. Find a location where the light is softer and more even, such as under a tree or near a large window, and let the magic happen.

Personally, during the weddung day, I try whenever possible to shoot when the rain stops. For a minimum of planning, I rely on the weather service of the Italian military aviation, which is usually quite accurate.

Playing with natural elements like falling water or puddles forming on the ground can bring about interesting and dynamic compositions for your rainy wedding day.
